Definition
Inflammation of the endocardium (inner lining of the heart) affecting the heart valves
Clinical context
A 28-year-old IV drug user presents with fever, fatigue, and a new regurgitant murmur. Echocardiography reveals vegetations on the tricuspid valve. Blood cultures are positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The patient's condition deteriorates despite antibiotic therapy, requiring urgent surgical valve replacement.
