Definition
inflammation of a valve, especially of a heart valve
Clinical context
A 35-year-old IV drug user presents with fever, malaise, and new onset of regurgitant murmur. Echocardiography reveals vegetations on the tricuspid valve with evidence of valvulitis. Blood cultures are positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The patient requires urgent surgical intervention to prevent septic emboli and heart failure.
